Why are S. Asians obsessed with pale skin?

I keep hearing people from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan say things in favor of pale skin and against dark skin. I could understand if pale people were promoting paleness, but the people I know are all as dark or darker than me. I think it is natural to like yourself, so what gives? Where do they get these attitudes about being brown?
