Making a rag quilt and i need help?

Im trying to put together a rag quilt and wast sure about some things. I am doing it out of denim and flannel. Can you mix the denim and flannel for the front? Would i need to put a middle layer in it if it was flannel on front and back but some are denim on front and flannel on back? any help would be great
